This beautiful hand made paper is made of a perfectly pulped combination of about 90% elephant dung and 10% post-consumer office waste paper. It has a gorgeous fibrous texture.

Elephant paper is made in Sri Lanka. The production of this paper contributes directly to the villagers' income and a percentage of all profit goes to help care for elephants at the Millennium Elephant Foundation - a home for aging and disabled elephants.
Elephant paper does not smell. In fact elephant dung shouldn't really smell either (unless the animal is ill) and as poor digesters, elephants make the perfect 'mulching machines' for pre-pulp paper making. They eat around 170kg of food per day and from that, produce about 100kg of dung.

How is the paper made?
The dung is first washed and boiled until there are only clean, white-ish fibres left, then it is pulped to perfection along with some post-consumer office waste paper. The next step is colouring the batch of pulp. The pulp mix is then pored into mesh frames to drain and dry in the warm air.
From beginning to end the paper takes about 13 days to come full circle.
